Today we’re exploring the Noun Project, a project whose mission is “sharing, celebrating, and enhancing the world’s visual language.” The people behind the Noun Project facilitate this fascinating visual conversation through their website and through community-based design meetups called “Iconathons.”
The Noun Project is a popular project that gives users access to hundreds of icons for free. Members of the project can contribute their own icons, and use icons by other designers. If you ever need a nice, neat icon for a document, the Noun Project is the first place to look. It will likely be the only place you need to look. The Noun Project is the resource for you! Search for relevant icons by keyword and then use them in your ma. Need awesome stylized icons for your next design? The Noun Project is the resource. The Noun Project Visually Communicate Anything. The Noun Project community is building a visual language that anyone can use and understand.

The Noun Project Symbols
When you visit the Noun Project’s website, you’ll see a giant visual list of icons – symbols – nouns – everything from “banana” to “bicycle” to “book.” All of the symbols are available for free download and use. Users can create accounts to view their favorite icons and to upload their own submissions.
Not sure where to begin? Check out the Featured Collections link. This generates manageable sets of icons based on a certain theme or category, from the National Park Service to Climacons.
Noun Project Iconathons
Iconathons are day-long collaborative design workshops, the aim of which is to “to add to the public domain a set of graphic symbols that can be used by both the public and the private sectors to easily communicate universally recognized concepts to a diverse group of people.” The coolest part of Iconathons (to me, anyway) is that they rely on everyone from visual designers to urban planners to city staffers to “everyday” citizens to come together, participate in workshops and icon making sessions. All of the icons are uploaded to and curated by the Noun Project.
